Travel Light, Travel Right

Have you ever been so uncomfortable on a plane that you couldn't wait for your feet to touch the ground? Or regretted wearing those tight jeans that looked so good in your bedroom mirror but now feel like a vise grip around your waist.

Or those stylish ankle boots that are now a claustrophobic prison for your swelling feet. At Breeth, we're all about comfort and believe a few practical style tips can improve any travel situation.

Here are the best travel outfits that solve common issues and all the worst mistakes you should avoid:

For the airport and plane:

Air travel comes with its challenges. Stressing to be on time. Check-in’s. Security screening. Feeling hot but then a blast of cold air hits you at the gate. Cramped onboard seats and flight delays are still an air travel fact of life. The key to navigating this ever-changing landscape? Layers, breathability, and smart fabric choices.

Here’s how to dress to beat the stress and maximise comfort.

A pulled-together look in neutral colours goes miles in style points no matter how casual the clothes are. First slide into your cotton leggings add a flattering tee and a boatneck sweater or even a stylish hoodie. Finish your look off with easy slip-on shoes like sneakers or the new stylish Crocs selection (I’m yet to find a more comfortable shoe!)

On this point, make sure to get your hands on a pair of Breeth socks that are moisture-wicking and quick-dry, meaning no stinky feet!  (These are a lifesaver, believe me).

Stop ruining your travel experience

Skip anything that is stiff, structured, too bare or complicated like skinny jeans, tank tops, booties, mules, and sandals, or rigid underwire bras.

Not only do jeans and tight clothing affect mobility and comfort, but they can also put your health at risk while you’re up in the air. With the air pressure in the cabin increasing the higher the plane flies, the more likely you are to experience a unique form of bloating known as “jet belly.” Peter Hackett, M.D., who works as the director of the Institute for Altitude Medicine in Telluride, explains that gas in the intestines will expand about 30% with a cabin altitude of approximately 2000 meters. In addition to “jet belly” tight clothing can cause greater health issues, such as slowed blood circulation and even blood clots. A frequent condition that befalls airline passengers is deep vein thrombosis. For this reason, it is best to avoid any form of jeans or tight clothing that restricts your abdomen and instead opt for our Breeth leggings that have a waistband that moves with you.

Skip long, flowy dresses or skirts that will restrict your movement and make your flight experience uncomfortable.

Overalls and jumpsuits might seem like an ideal and comfortable choice for airplane travel. However, if you think about the practicalities of wearing overalls, jumpsuits or any sort of one-piece attire on a plane, you will probably think again about snapping those straps into place before leaving for the airport.

Synthetic clothing is a hard NO! Synthetic fibres are man-made and inorganically sourced from chemicals rather than naturally occurring materials. These fibres have become incredibly popular because they’re lightweight and flexible. However, people should also know that synthetic fibres take energy out of your body and are flammable- extremely flammable. This might not highly affect your day-to-day life but if you’re in an aircraft, it would be wise to double check the tags on your clothing to make sure that you won’t be donning synthetically-made clothing on the plane. The National Transportation Safety Board warns that 68% of plane crash deaths happen not during impact, but rather in “post-crash fires” This means out of 25 passengers that pass away, 17 of them are fire related casualties (via Scientific American). For comfort, energy and safety, it’s best to wear natural fibres such as cotton, linen and wool that are breathable and can regulate your temperature depending on your environment.

Avoid strong scents that might trigger an allergic reaction in other passengers or that can make you nauseas. While it can be tempting to spritz up with your favourite fancy cologne or perfume before boarding a plane to an exciting destination, the rule of plane etiquette is to hold back and wait until the plane has landed before spraying your mysterious chemicals.

For the fashionista out there, this one might be a hard pill to swallow, but one accessory you should be careful about wearing on a flight is large, chunky jewellery. While most passengers will be able to wear their dainty jewellery pieces through airport security, those who wear bigger statement pieces might have to leave it in their treasure chest.

For a road trip

Whether you’re headed cross-country to see the Drakensberg Mountains or taking a scenic drive along the coast to table mountain, car travel can be challenging.

Any combination of athleisure wear, leggings (our leggings literally feel like emotional support in a pants), track pants and hoodies with any basic tee will make your journey memorable. Again, stick with neutrals for a stylish effect, and try rubber soled shoes like Hush Puppies, loafers or crocks. Skip anything tight or constricting. Though feel free to add those Breeth Slack knit socks  if your legs tend to swell with long hours of no walking.

Sightseeing

From the high end experience of the Lord Charles Hotel to wine tramps, you want to feel comfortable and look stylish. At Breeth it is not one or the other but both! A jean and our butter soft cotton tees are one of the best combinations you will ever find! Throw on a blazer and heads will turn. If you want a more youthful look pair a skirt or linen pants with our  “stay-in-place” crop top.

Conclusion

When you pack Breeth, you're not just preparing your suitcase, you're investing in a seamless journey. Make Breeth your go to item because with the right clothing, every adventure is just the beginning!

Dirk & Danel's story

"Absolutely love Breeth!

My husband and I did a trip to Mauritius recently and packed all you can think of for an island trip… In the end Breeth apparel was our go to and we realized that we absolutely loved the fabric on our skin. It is well structured yet soft and does not restrict movement. It is clothing you would truly appreciate after trying it on.

I’ve got their polo shirts, long sleeve and short sleeve T-shirt and some of their leggings, long and short! I also have their hoodie which has become my favorite and then I also tried their skirt, which to my surprise had so many applications on the island. I am not a skirt person, but the structure and lack of restraint of movement is something I have not yet experienced before.

For our next trip I am only packing Breeth! It is absolutely versatile, breathable and the most comfortable to travel in.

They sure do deliver on their promise to elevate your journey!"
